Lunar New Year Inspired Wedding in Bold Red and Pink
To say this Lunar New Year inspired wedding stopped us in our tracks is an understatement. It had us stopping, running back to grab our friends and then gawking over every dreamy detail while minutes turned into hours. Casey and Jason wed in a Houston country club, but you’d never even know it once you see how they completely transformed the space to tell their story in vibrant color! At the helm of this memorable soiree was the fabulous Kelly Doonan Events, whose eye for creative storytelling knows no bounds, and the backdrop that’s sure to light a fire in your heart (not to mention allllll the swoon-worthy blooms on display throughout the wedding day) was skillfully crafted by Mibellarosa. From the Bride, Casey: We picked the Houston Country Club because we were able to have the ceremony and reception in the same place and it fit our vibe perfectly! The light blue walls blended so well with our color palette. Jason and I both grew up in just outside of Houston and the majority of our family lives there. It just made the most sense to have it in Houston so our family would not have to travel.
Our overall theme was inspired by the Asian Lunar New Year and so we went with a red, gold, pink, and navy color palette.
Our paper goods were inspired by Chinese navy blue and white line patterns you see on pottery and had the RSVP envelope address and the invitation return address surrounded by a navy blue border. The invitations themselves had this similar border intertwined with red flowers with navy blue leaves, text and a white background. Names and addresses were handwritten in navy blue calligraphy. Each invitation envelope was sealed with a wax seal that had the letters C and J in the center enveloped by trees. The trees are symbolic because our last name Lin means forest in Mandarin! The menus had the same border and text as our invitations.
For the ceremony, we had a beautiful floral explosion of an arch with decorative fans intertwined within the flowers and rose petals scattered on the ground. The arch doubled as the backdrop for the cake! The chairs used for the ceremony and reception were gold with bright red cushions. There was a medium floral arrangement at each row of chairs, lining the aisle. Those arrangements were repurposed to line the DJ booth for the reception. The sweetheart table had a special glittery light pink tablecloth, different than the rest of the tables which were patterned with a red design, surrounded by flowers and rose petals. We also had a giant mirror that had all the guest’s names on it in alphabetical order with their table number next to their name!
Within the centerpieces, there were little gold elements and red envelopes hanging off which are traditionally given at each Lunar New Year. The cake had the Chinese character for “double happiness” in gold on the top tier that is common to see as decoration and often seen at Chinese/Taiwanese weddings. Each guest was given a red fortune cookie as their parting gift!
Our cake was three tiers with three different flavors! Matcha, strawberry and vanilla almond. It had white fondant with gold accents that were the same pattern used on our wedding invitations, several beautiful sugar flowers that were coordinated to match our actual florals used, along with the Chinese symbol for “double happiness” on the top tier.
My favorite moment was at the end of the night as “Don’t Stop Believin’” was about half-way over, everyone had circled around Jason and I, singing at the top of their lungs. Then people started shooting off confetti cannons and the confetti rained down around us. It felt so surreal and magical. It’s like everything went into slow motion and I could see my new husband next me and everyone I loved all around me having the time of their lives.
From the Groom, Jason: My favorite moment of our wedding was watching Casey walk down the aisle. I was already near tears because of the music and anticipation. Once I saw Casey, I cried and cried and cried. I’ve never cried so much out of pure joy. It was magical.
