Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art Wedding

I hope you’ve got some time carved out, because you’ll want at least a few extra minutes to savor each image from this Aussie wedding shot by Ben Adams. Edita and Greg spent the morning of their wedding roaming around Sydney taking relaxed (yet breathtaking) portraits with Ben, and then slipped into their finest to exchange vows on the rooftop and dance the night away at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

From the bride, Edita: Throughout the whole process of planning the wedding, we wanted to create a day that was true to who we are. A traditional wedding wasn’t really our thing and we wanted to keep it fairly relaxed and just have a big, fun party that everyone could enjoy. Greg and I have mutual friends who introduced us (I knew them from primary school and were family friends, and Greg went to high school with all of them, hence the all male bridal party). At the end of the day, we couldn’t have imagined anyone else being a part of our big day.

Books emerged as a subtle theme which worked itself into the wedding. We created books as invitations to share our story and give our guests a bit of information about our bridal party, families and our relationship. Coloured notebooks were also given out to the guests as the bonbonniere with a pencil that said ‘Better Together.’ There was also an artist on Etsy who created a stamp for us, which in turned became a bit of a logo. Style-wise I love gold and we liked the idea of filling the room with flowers to warm the room and to have a cigar lounge with vintage lounges where people could relax. Our florist/stylist Justine Rose was amazing and the floral arrangements were better than we had ever imagined, particularly the hanging flower sculptures above each of the tables.

We had a cocktail hour between the ceremony and reception, so thought it would be important to create an icebreaker and get people chatting, and lighten the mood. We had created individual badges/buttons for each of our guests. Each were button was personalised with a little line about something we know/love about each guest. Greg and I love relaxing over a Hendricks and tonic so we collected several bottles, which our stylist had used as vases. We also liked the idea of having a cigar lounge so we had personalised cigars made with our logo, sourced a vintage lounge suite and bar and had an area where guests could relax away from the tables.

Any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I think one of the best complements we have received from our wedding, was that our wedding was very ‘us’. We had considered each element pretty carefully and I love that it was like a big project that Greg and I worked on together. Everything from the invites, to the decorations, to our outfits and song choices, we had planed together so it was nice to finally see everything come together and share it all with our friends and family. We were pretty lucky because we have similar taste and were able to do some creative problem solving, not only to keep to budget but also to put it together exactly the way we wanted it. We don’t think a wedding is meant to be stressful, so just have fun with it and everything will work out the way it’s meant to. Our motto for the day was also to ‘roll with the punches’. There may be things that don’t turn out the way you expect them to (the zipper on my dress broke the day before the wedding!), but at the end of the day you’re getting married to your best friend, and that’s the main thing!

Our musicians Aubrey and Purton were also a highlight. They are 2 men who play ukuleles and so many of our guests commented on how much they enjoyed them. We actually found them as they used to play at our local market and Greg and I would often go to see them. I remember one time we went down, Greg said “If I ever get married, I want them to play.” They were also so great to us, and learned a number of songs to play on the night. Their version of Bohemian Like You was the perfect rendition for our first dance.
